About Vectren

Indiana Customers:
Step 1: In most situations, Vectren will install the service line and the gas meter free of charge providing the meter location does not exceed 75 feet from the property line. There will be a nominal/per foot charge for services greater than 75 feet in length (on the customer's property). Contact Vectren for details. Gas meters are typically located on the front or side of the home at a location that is mutually acceptable to both the homeowner and Vectren.

Step 2: You or your contractor will then install the fuel line between the meter bracket and the equipment in the house.

Step 3: After the service and fuel lines have been extended to the meter bracket, an inspection is required to validate proper installation.

All piping installations must meet the requirements of the National Fuel Gas Code, Building Officials Code Administration (BOCA), local codes and ordinances, and inspection authorities, as well as the terms and conditions of gas service of Vectren as approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
Step 4: When your natural gas equipment is ready, have your contractor notify Vectren at 1-800-227-1376 Option 6 to schedule an appointment for the meter turn on.

Special Notice
Responsibility for Gas Piping

The customer is responsible for the maintenance of all gas piping from the gas meter to all gas appliances. Buried gas piping, which is not maintained, is subject to potential hazards of corrosion and leakage.

For your safety, all buried gas piping should be periodically inspected for leaks. If the buried piping is metallic, it should also be periodically inspected for corrosion. If an unsafe condition is found, the gas piping will need to be promptly repaired.

When digging near buried gas piping, the piping must be located in advance and digging should be done by hand. Plumbing and heating contractors can assist in locating, inspecting and repairing customers’ buried pipelines.
