Global Climate Change

Global Climate Change

There is a general belief among most scientists that the earth is slowly warming and that this climate change is caused in large part by human activity. It may have many serious and potentially damaging effects in the decades ahead. Most believe greenhouse gas emissions from cars, airplanes, industries, power plants and other human activities are all contributors to climate change. Essentially, the burning of fossil fuels has increased the concentrations of carbon in our atmosphere, which is preventing the Earth's heat from escaping into space.

Recently, the climate change bill known as the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and will now move on to the Senate. The bill establishes a nationwide greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program that would help the U.S. collectively focus on reducing carbon emissions. At Vectren, we support the passage of fair, comprehensive legislation that helps all Americans transition to a carbon-constrained nation. At the same time, we support the continued use of clean-coal technology that allows us to continue to utilize our nation's most abundant natural resource.

As the climate change bill continues to evolve in Congress, Vectren is advocating for legislation that minimizes the financial burden to our customers, most of which rely on coal-fired generation to meet their energy needs. We must allow a sufficient period for commercially-available carbon capture and sequestration technology to emerge. We encourage our customers to review our fact sheet to learn more about how this legislation will impact them and how we can effectively reduce carbon emissions while at the same time ensuring a sound economy. We also encourage you to contact your Congressional representatives and urge them to consider Midwest customers when enacting the bill. Click here for a sample letter.

It's important to keep in mind that climate change is a global issue, and America cannot act alone. It certainly won't be inexpensive to tackle this global issue. However, with the passage of a fair bill that takes into account the impact to all Americans, the U.S. can set the pace for reducing carbon emissions and combating the climate change issue.
