Are Pipelines Safe?
Natural gas pipelines are the safest method of transporting energy. They lie underground, virtually unseen as they deliver large volumes of gas to their customers. Although Vectren follows strict pipeline safety procedures, it is still important for everyone living and working near gas pipelines to know basic safety information. Also, pipelines are part of the critical infrastructure of the United States energy grid. While pipeline companies and employees across the nation are on a heightened state of alert, we continue to monitor and patrol the pipelines regularly via aircraft, vehicles, and/or on foot. Please call local law enforcement if you see anything out of the ordinary in your area. Together, we can take precautions that will keep America strong.
Pipeline Location and Markers
Vectren and other companies install above-ground markers to indicate the location of buried pipelines and gas lines. The markers were developed by the gas industry and later incorporated into the federal regulations for the industry. The natural gas industry is cooperating with other utilities to standardize temporary marking of underground utilities to further enhance public safety. Additionally, the pipeline markers have emergency contact numbers. The standard marking color for natural gas facilities is yellow.
