Job Summary:
JOB PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Corporate Counsel, this individual will investigate and handle all aspects of claims brought against the organization as well as manage and oversee the Company’s insurance program.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Provides direct oversight of Company’s insurance program. Ensures that types of insurance carried and levels of coverage are appropriate to provide for reasonable recovery of various types of losses. Manages relationship with insurance broker. Provides all information necessary to secure quotations from various carriers during the renewal process. Makes recommendations to upper management in terms of levels and types of coverage. Provides benchmarking information as necessary. Keeps apprised of various trends in the industry and recommends changes to insurance program as necessary. Secures bonds on behalf of the Company as required. Advises management on various contractual issues relating to insurance and claims. Manages and oversees all aspects of claims brought against the Company and its subsidiaries, including the intake, investigation and disposition of those claims. May be required to attend on-site investigations. Retains external claims handling as needed. Reports claims, as necessary, to insurance carriers. Negotiates with various types of claimants, including insurance adjusters and attorneys. Recognizes, analyzes and provides documentation of trends. Ensures that reports needed for litigation are complete and accurate. Works with Operations to improve policies and procedures as necessary. Serves on various internal committees and advises on various risk management issues as they arise. Works with Company attorneys in identifying individuals available for court appearances, documentation, etc. Provides documented evidence as may be necessary to defend claims. Attends mediations and trials, as requested. May be required to testify in legal proceedings. Meets with company employees and contractor representatives as requested. Organizes and prioritizes large volumes of information and calls. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments.

Qualifications
Education and Certifications
Required: Bachelors Degree in business or related field or JD
Experience
Required: In-depth knowledge of insurance industry and claims handling. Budgeting skills.
Preferred: Experience with claims negotiation and litigation. Understanding of insurance coverage issues.
Functional / Technical Requirements
Required: Excellent communication (written and oral), customer service, organizational, negotiation and PC skills.
Preferred: General knowledge of utility operations a plus. Some travel required.
