Net metering options

Interested in adding solar panels or another form of customer generation?

Through a program called net metering, residential, small business and industrial customers can generate their own electricity, up to 1 megawatt, to supplement the supply they get from Vectren. Net metering customers are charged only for the "net" power that they consume from Vectren that has accumulated over a designated period or, if their renewable energy-generating systems make more electricity than is consumed, they may be credited for the excess electricity contributed to the grid over that same period.

Common service questions

Complete the Start Service online process to start Vectren service in your name. You will need the following information to submit your online request:

  • Personal information (your Social Security Number, date of birth and legal name)
  • Contact details (at least one phone number and a valid email address is required to start service online)
  • Service information (the date you wish to turn on service and, if applicable, the services you wish to start)
  • Access instructions (the number of pets at the location, day-of-service contact details and information about accessing the inside of the location).

If you are renovating or building, you may need to request the installation of a new Vectren meter prior to starting service. Visit the Getting Connected page for information on requesting a new Vectren meter.

Whether you are temporarily stopping service or looking to close your account, use Stop Service online process to turn off a Vectren service(s) currently in your name. If you turn off your Vectren service, we will always send you a final paper bill to a forwarding mailing address that you specify. You will need the following information to submit your online request:

  • Account holder information (the name and Social Security Number of the account holder)
  • Contact details (at least one phone number and a valid email address is required to stop service online)
  • Forwarding mailing address for your final bill
  • Service information (the date you wish to turn off service and, if applicable, the services you wish to stop)
  • Access instructions (the number of pets at the location, day-of-service contact details and information about accessing the inside of the location).

If you are moving, you essentially have three options regarding your Vectren service and account:

  • Transfer service - Transferring service involves a simple transfer of your service from one address to another. With this option, we will turn off your Vectren service at the location you are moving from and start service at the address you are moving to.
  • Add a location - By adding a location, we will simply start service at your new location - you will retain the Vectren service at your current address. When you ready to stop service at your original location, use our Stop Service online process.
  • Stop a service - If your new location already has active Vectren service and you want to turn off your original service, complete our Stop Service online process.

While anyone may request new service online, only the account holder may request to turn off an existing service. The account holder is the individual who originally requested service at the location and whose name is listed at the top of each Vectren statement. After the application to start or turn off service is received, a typical service request can take anywhere from 1-3 business days to be completed.
